About Rondo Forest Reserve

Located in the Lindi Region of southeastern Tanzania, the Rondo Forest Reserve covers approximately 17,500 hectares of tropical evergreen and semi-deciduous forest. The reserve is one of the last remaining patches of indigenous forest in the area and serves as a critical refuge for a wide variety of rare plant and animal species. Geographically, Rondo is characterized by hilly and rugged terrain with a network of perennial streams and waterfalls, creating diverse microhabitats. This forest is renowned for its remarkable botanical diversity, harboring several endemic and threatened tree species, including the Pterocarpus angolensis and the East African Mahogany. The Rondo Forest is also home to an array of wildlife such as chimpanzees, various primate species, elephants, and colorful birdlife, making it a significant site for both conservation and eco-tourism.

Historically, the forest has seen pressures from logging, agricultural encroachment, and human settlement, but it remains a vital conservation area managed by the Tanzanian government and supported by international partners. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for hiking along guided trails that lead to scenic waterfalls, birdwatching expeditions, and opportunities to experience traditional knowledge of local communities. Notable features include the Rondo Plateau, steep ravines, and rare forest patches that provide important ecological services, including water catchment and carbon storage. While visitation infrastructure is modest, the forest offers a peaceful, relatively undisturbed environment for nature lovers and researchers alike.

Rondo Forest Reserve’s combination of rich biodiversity and scenic beauty makes it an essential destination for those interested in tropical forest ecosystems and conservation efforts in East Africa.
